Mar 31 , 2011

Learn about the best spots for Cape Town wine tasting so you have the best experience possible during your vacation.

You've read about the best Cape Town restaurants, but what about Cape Town wine? For those of you who love chardonnay, pinot noir, and everything in between, here are three great choices for Cape Town wine tasting.

Spier

Located in Stellenbosch, Spier has been making wine since the eighteenth century and looks out on Helderberg Mountain. You have three choices for wine tasting: try five wines outside or in the lounge, taste the beverage right out of the barrel and learn about how wine is made, or indulge in a wine tasting that features many renowned varieties. Spier is also a top destination for Cape Town wine tasting because the winery offers many other activities, including touring a farm, seeing contemporary art, and even visiting an eagle preservation center.

Delaire Graff Estate

The Delaire Graff Estate lies on the stunning Helshoogte Mountain Pass and is another fantastic option for your Cape Town wine tasting experience. At the Delaire Graff Estate, you'll unwind and taste great vinatges in the Wine Lounge, which features leather chairs, art, and sweeping views of the South African landscape. Since 2009, the Delaire Graff Estate has received numerous awards for its wines. While at the Delaire Graff Estate, you can relax at the spa, eat outside at the Indochine restaurant, and explore the gardens.

Fort Simon Wine Estate

The tasting room and cellar of the Fort Simon Wine Estate are in a castle, making this winery a noteworthy—and unique—option for a Cape Town wine tasting event. The Fort Simon Wine Estate consists of 80 hectares (roughly 197 acres) and has produced many acclaimed wines, including a Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Tastings are available every day of the week except for Sunday.

Now that you know of these South African wineries, you're ready to swirl, sniff, and sip!
