When it comes to choosing beaches in Cape Town, you have options! Where else can you ask yourself, "Which ocean do I want to visit today?" Whether you're in the city or on the Atlantic or the Indian Ocean, you're sure to find the perfect place for even the most fastidious beachgoer. Cape Town Beaches are eclectic and large in number.
To Relax
Clifton beach, compiled of 4 sheltered, sandy coves divided by boulders, is great place for getting away from strong winds. If want to be social, head to the fourth beach, which tends to be the busiest. It has great snack shacks and changing rooms. As you sunbathe, you may notice the occasional paraglider floating above you (they take off from the top of Lion's head and tend to glide over many Cape Town beaches). Be aware of markings for strong undertow; certain areas near Clifton beach can be a bit dangerous at times.
If you're looking for a romantic sunset on the beach, you must go to Llandudno, which is located about 20 km south of Cape Town. The pristine, remote setting is tucked away from the rest of the world, giving you and your significant other along time. Bring a picnic and a bottle of wine to accompany the breathtaking views.
To Play
For family fun and games of beach volleyball, Camps is a great place to go. This long beach is excellent for family picnics, beach games, and sand castles. It also has many shops and cafés on the other side of the street for exploring. Since Camps is quite a large beach, many people tend to visit and parking can be sparse. Try parking on one of the many side roads if it's busy. Remember to check the winds in summer because some parts of Camps are not well protected.
Hout Bay has amazing, fresh seafood and fun, family entertainment. The seafood comes directly from the Cape Town beaches and its freshness can't be beat. Much like the wharf in San Francisco, Hout Bay has small shops, restaurants, and bars. Hout Bay is also a great place for sunbathing, swimming, and paddle skiing.
If you're interested in an active beach with great views of Table Mountain, consider going to the sandy beaches of Blouberg, Big Bay, and Little Bay, about 20 km north of Cape Town. A strong south easterly wind makes the Blouberg the best Cape Town beaches for windsurfing, kite boarding, sailing, and flying kites. Be sure to bring a windbreaker on this excursion! Take in the magnificent views of Table Mountain while watching hobie cats show off.
For an adventure on horseback, drive to Noordhoek Beach, the widest of the Cape Town beaches. Enjoy riding horses on the 8km long, spotless beach. On Noordhoek Beach, you'll feel totally alone. Few people visit Noordhoek Beach and you'll even get to see a deserted ship, the Kakapo, which has been preserved in the sand since 1900.
To Sightsee
If you've come to the Cape Town beaches to see wildlife, head to Boulders Beach a little past Simon's town. Boulders Beach is known as the most accessible breeding colony of African Penguins in the entire world. You'll see many penguins and hear their unique "donkey-like" calls. Aside from seeing the adorable penguins, you also can enjoy wonderful sheltered swimming in the cove. But make sure to bring some money with you; since the National Parks service control Boulders Beach, you'll have to pay a small fee.
