The Cape Town Minstrels Carnival
If you are in South Africa around New Year’s Day consider the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, also known as Kaapse. The celebration held on January 2 offers singing, dancing, colorful costumes, and more, all parading through the streets of Cape Town.
The Cape Town Minstrels Carnival is held in celebration of kicking off the New Year. The festivities are attended by thousands of people, creating a celebration event not to be missed. Known as Cape Town’s “longest-running street party” the Cape Town Minstrels Carnival is celebrated on the only day in history that slaves were given off from work.
Music, singing, a wild and colorful parade, and local performers all mark the Cape Town Minstrel’s Parade. The local community is known to dress up as minstrels and dance and sing their way through the walking parade. The Cape Town Minstrels Carnival Parade is held beginning at Zonnebloem (District Six) and adventuring through the center of the city.
